Anna Bligh, the Premiere of Queensland, has called an early state election. The 21st of March 2009 is the date Queenslanders will go to the polls.

This will be Ms Bligh's first election as premiere. She took over from Peter Beatie in 2007, after he retired from the job.

The election will come down to a choice between Labour (Anna Bligh) and the Liberal National Party (LNP) led by Lawrence Springborg.

Queensland has a total of 89 seats, of which Labour control 58. To win the the election, the LNP need an additional 22 seats.

Voting

If you are an Australian citizen, It is important to ensure you are listed correctly on the electoral roll. (particularly as voting is compulsory in Australia.) For more information, go to the website of the Australian Electoral Commission.

If you hold the status of Australian resident, but are not yet a citizen, you won't be able to vote.
